Running

I got back from Vail, Colorado on Sunday Night. The trip was great, we spent the nights out in Vail Village on Mardi Gras weekend. I had the benefit of having a local, Scott Miller, lead the way around. I’m definitely jealous of everyone that gets to live and work in Vail.

I took snowboarding lessons on Friday, spending the day learning the basics. I went down Lionshead the next day, that was a bit tough. Even though I’m really sore, I had a great time. I can’t wait for my next chance to get back out snowboarding. Update: I developed the pictures from the trip.

I also did the Cordillera Moonlight Snowshoe 5k Race. It was a fun race, we started at 7pm. And despite the name, there wasn’t a Moon. So it was completely dark, and everyone had a headlamp on. It was my first time racing with snowshoes, and I fell a few times on the course. It was a great challenge, I ended up getting 29th overall. Then I won the raffle after, getting a long sleeved shirt and beanie.

Hey runners, set your Tivo’s to record the 2006 USA Cross Country Championships on ESPN2 (Sunday Feb 19th, 11:00pm CST).

The 2006 USA Cross Country Championships and World Cross Country Team Trials, which will be conducted in New York City’s famed Van Cortlandt Park on February 18-19, 2006, features the top distance runners in the USA vying for a spot on the team that will represent the USA at the 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Japan. The weekend will also include the USA Masters 8 km Cross Country Championships.

I got a really cool email from USA Track & Field. They’ve been working on a new service that allows you to map out your running routes, here’s the details:

Run It. Map It. Share It. A database of America’s Running Routes. Using cutting edge technology provided by Google Maps, USATF has developed a revolutionary service, America’s Running Routes, that allows runners to map and measure their favorite running routes and then save them to the largest searchable database of running routes in the country.

Ever wonder how far your run was? Just visit America’s Running Routes, map out your run, and the distance you ran will be displayed, including mile marks along the route. Think others might enjoy your running route? Just hit the “save” button and your route will be added to the national database.

This would’ve been perfect a year ago, when I was coaching the Hastings St. Cecilia squad. I put together our favorite routes for Cross Country and Track practice:

St. Cecilia Workout Routes

District assignments have been released and St. Cecilia will be Class B in Track this year. This presents a challenge to the team, but I think they’re up to it. Unfortunately STC has been bouncing between Class C and B every year, making it difficult for them to get used to their competition. I’m going to be watching this season closely from Omaha, I wish I could there for another season.

Peach Ballers Other news about the STC kids from Brian Neilson: “.. Last Saturday night when Sam Small, Ryan McDowell, Tyler Hottovy, Jake Mertens and I balled it up against the YMCA employees at halftime of the real boys bball game. For the Y’s 125th anniversary, we played some old school peach-basketball, with no backboards and no dribbling. We dominated, of course, about 6-0 or something. There is the newspaper clipping attached to this email.” You can see Brian in the picture. I would’ve loved to have see that game.

The picture is from the Hastings Tribune.

The St. Cecilia Cross Country team competed at the 2005 State Cross Country meet, which is held in Kearney, Nebraska. The Boys team qualified, which included Derek Sekora, Brandon Boesch, Brian Neilson, Brett Hodgen, Alex Theis and Jesse Oswald. Two girls qualified as individuals, Morgan Dubas and Meghan Nemetz.

The entire Boys team ran a great race, many of them PR’ed on the Kearney course. They finished 11th overall. Morgan Dubas ran a time that was 27 seconds faster than last year, and placed 16th overall. Meghan Nemetz improved from her performance last year by 5 places, running a great time.

I just checked my voice mail and got a message from Coach Scott Rosno. The St. Cecilia Cross Country team had a great day at their District meet in Minden, Ne. The Girls team placed 5th overall, qualifying Morgan Dubas and Meghan Nemetz for State. The Boys team placed 2nd overall, qualifying the entire team for State. This is the highest team placing from a St. Cecilia Boys team in Districts, ever.

I wish I could’ve been there, and witnessed how all the StC squad’s hard work paid off. Congratulations Everyone!!!

Derek Sekora in the Centennial ConferenceI finally posted the pictures for the St. Cecilia Invitational and the Centennial Conference meet. The team is doing very well, it looks like our best Boys team ever. We placed 2nd at Unk and 4th in our Conference. Next Thursday is the District meet, I am excited to see how well they do.

Brian Neilson designed a poster for the St. Cecilia Newspaper. It featured the Cross Country team and the season to date. I got it printed out and posted in my office. Here’s the message from Brian:

Hello friends!

This year in newspaper class, we are going to feature each sport on a poster throughout the year. Last week was cross country. Attached is the poster. A big thanks to Pete for the pictures, via brandonpetersen.com.

Hastings College Cross Country ReunionAlumni from the Hastings College Cross Country and Track team had a Reunion over the past weekend. Some came from all over the nation, Vail, Fort Collins, Phoenix, Indianapolis and Boston. We had a chance to catch up, some of us hadn’t seen each other for 5 years.

St. Cecilia competed at the Filmore Central Cross Country Invite. It was a perfect day for a Cross Country meet. It was good to see the team again, they are running very well. It’s exciting to see a lot of new young talent on the team.

Derek Sekora got 13th place, Brian Nielson got 15th place, Brandon Boesch got 16th place and Brett Hodgen was 26th place. The boys team placed 4th overall. The girls results were messed up, so I didn’t come home with much info. But, Morgan Dubas did get 3rd place overall.

I have added an album of the meet on my Photo Gallery:

To all – our plan is coming together nicely. Be sure to forward this info to any alumni that may not have gotten the email or heard from someone else; there are a couple different email lists floating around.

We are up to about 18 or 19 attendees, but there may be a few key people that haven’t replied. We need some input from everyone. The plan has been updated, you can find the latest details here.

St. Cecilia started their 2005 Cross Country season. On Aug. 15th, they started practicing. I called Head Coach Scott Rosno last night to see how the team is doing. They’re a little smaller than last year, missing some people who graduated. But that opens the door for new runners to lead the charge.

I really feel that this will be a great year for StC XC. The runners did a lot during the summer. Our experienced runners are becoming really solid runners and our younger runners are starting out better every year. As the season progresses, I’ll post the results. So check back.

St. Cecilia Cross Country Schedule

Race Location Date Time

How about getting back together? On September 17th we are planning a reunion, in Lincoln or Hastings. If you can make it, post a comment below.

UPDATE: We are in the process of planning the Reunion. I have created a new Post for the details. You can find them here.

I traveled back to Hastings to go to a Potluck Dinner on August 31st. I really appreciated the dinner and the chance to see everyone. Great food, I had to take a couple trips to the food table.

The best was getting the Hub Cap from Brandon Boesch, Brian Nielson, Derek Sekora and Zach Dubas. We had been collected loose hub caps that we saw during runs, over the past two years. We had a big collection going. The STC crew gave me a signed one.

The trip back to Omaha was a little tough. I’m going to miss the team, coaching the St Cecilia kids for the past two years is one of the best experiences I’ve had. I couldn’t even start to explain, each person brought great things to the table. Students, Athletes, Coaches and Parents. I’d really like to thank everyone on the STC squad.

I got a chance to run two races on July 9th, a 5k in the morning and a 10k at night. It was a bit of a challenge but really fun. I ran the ‘Run for Justin’ in Omaha, a really nice 5k course. I ran with Kari Meyer, who PR’d in the race. Very Cool!

Then later that evening I ran the 10k for the Cornhusker State Games, now called Footstock. Really cool idea, I’m sure more and more people will be there as the years go on. The 10k had a band, a beer garden, and huge inflatable things for children. It was really well ran, a very organized race. I ran a 40:40 and got 17th overall, results.

The best part about Footstock, was the chance to run against the St. Cecilia Cross Country team. They did a great job in the race and it was good to catch up. I think they’re going to have a great season next year, they look like they’re ready. The distict Assignments for Nebraska Cross Country are now out, assignments.

St. Cecilia Girls and Boys Track teams won the Sandy Creek Invitational. Everyone, including the coaches, achieved some real success. We were supposed to get bad weather, but the day turned out to be a great day for all involved.

Head of the StC Boys team, Vince Pelster, achieved a very special honor. He is now a Level 4 NSAA Track Coach. This is a very difficult title to gain, it takes a very high number of meet wins and points. He has been guiding very talented teams for the past 26 years, which includes 2 State Titles and a large number of District Championships. Coach Pelster had a huge impact on my personal running career, it’s been great to get a chance to work under him as an Assistant Coach.

We finished the UNK High School Class C Indoor Meet on Saturday. It was a very successful day, both the boys and girls teams won the meet. Many of our athletes were gone to Close Up in Washington D.C.

The Nebraska Track District assignments have just been released. They can be viewed at http://www.nsaahome.org/textfile/track/assign.htm. We are in District C-9, which will be held on May 12th. It hasn’t been decided yet which school will host the District meet.

We will keeping a close watch on Blue Hill, Doniphan-Trumbull, Franklin, Gibbon, Kearney Catholic, Shelton, Wilcox-Hildreth, and Wood River as the season progresses. Thanks to Brian Nielson for this info!

The St. Cecilia Track team has been set as a Class C team for 2005. Last year, STC competed in Class B, making us the smallest B team in the state. This year we will be one of the largest Class C teams in the State.

We’re loaded with talent, so I’m excited to see what we’ll do as the season comes. Many STC athletes have been training in the Preseason, if not already playing Basketball. This dedication can only mean good things.
